Winning at the Kansas City Dance Classic 2018

Sometimes you just need to travel. That was the case for the dancers at Adventures in Dance. William & Robyn had advanced their dancing to a level where they needed to go out of state to find competition. So, we packed our bags and traveled to the Kansas City Dance Classic.
Traveling to Kansas
Suitcases were packed, and dance shoes tucked away for the drive across Kansas. When we finally arrived Craig’s uncles Bruce and Paul met us in town and celebrated our arrival with a family dinner. It was all laughs and smiles with many cheers the night before the competition and we were happy for the break from driving.
Location
The Kansas City dance classic was held at the Overland park Marriott hotel. Their grand ballroom was lovely, and they fitted it with a 36×72 ft. ballroom dance floor. With such a massive floor they meant to have many dancers competing at one time. So to assist newcomers and frequent dancers alike heat numbers were projected on a big screen and TV’s around the ballroom.
Kansas City Dance Classic
The Kansas City dance classic opened with the national anthem. After the last note, dancers lined up in the on-deck area for the international Latin division. Dancing with their teachers Craig & Holly, Robyn and William danced against each other in the Gold Paso Doble, Viennese Waltz, and the International Standard Multi Dance Waltz which included Foxtrot, Tango & Quickstep. Robyn beat William at the Paso Doble and the Standard Multi-Dance but, Bill beat Robyn at the ballroom Viennese waltz.
Amateur dance competition
The real work was dancing as an amateur couple against their peers. They took an impressive number of first places and cleaned up on scholarship competitions. In Novice Latin Samba, Cha-cha & Rumba they took first of two couples and won their first scholarship. Thank you to Robero Schipp & Leigh Wieland from Nashville for sponsoring their scholarship. Standard Gold Ballroom they placed first of two couples and got a blue ribbon.
Smooth dance competition
Smooth ballroom competition was hotly contested with a seven-couple final in the silver division. They took first in all dances and received a scholarship from Cathy & Frank Burzik of Texas. Gold smooth featured four couples competing for the prize. Our couple Robyn and William took first in Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz. Thanks to Robero Schipp & Leigh Wieland from Nashville they received scholarship money for this as well.
Competition conclusion
Craig, Bill, Robyn, and I really enjoyed the Kansas City Dance Classic and had a great time talking to the students from other dance schools while we were there. The vendors had a fun selection of dance clothes and shoes for your shopping pleasure. This was a lovely event and worth the drive for dancers in the Kansas and Colorado.
