Disco Duck Phenomenon

So what’s the deal with Disco Duck? It’s a funky, quirky song that tapped into the spirit of its time and became a cultural phenomenon. It’s a reminder that music is meant to be fun, lighthearted, and entertaining. Disco Duck is a song that takes us back to the flashy, flamboyant, and funky era of 1976, when the disco craze was at its peak

Rick Dees

Rick Dees, the creator of Disco Duck, was a radio DJ who was looking to create a fun, lighthearted song that would get people moving on the dance floor. He drew inspiration from the popular disco songs of the time, but added his own twist – the quacking sound effects. The result was a song that was both a tribute to disco and a send-up of its excesses.

Dees was a shrewd businessman who knew how to market his song. He created a persona, Disco Duck, a charismatic performer who wore a bright yellow costume and platform shoes. The persona added to the song’s appeal, making it a must-see act in clubs and on TV shows.

Disco Duck’s Rise To Fame!

Disco Duck’s rise to fame was rapid and unexpected. It started getting airplay on local radio stations, then gradually made its way to the top 40 charts. By the fall of 1976, it had reached number one on the Billboard charts, knocking out other popular songs of the time.

Disco Duck’s reign at the top of the charts was short-lived, but its cultural impact lasted long after it fell off the charts. It became a symbol of the disco era, a reminder of the carefree, fun-loving spirit of the time. What a fun Throwback song to quack you up as your learn this line dance variation of this fun Disco hit.

Master The Art of 60’s Twist Dance Quickly

Learn how to master the art of the 60’s twist dance quickly with our step-by-step tutorial. Find out where the Twist came from and how it rose in popularity! Then get ready to twist and shout on the dance floor!

Where did the 60’s Twist Dance Come From?

Did you ever wonder where dance trends come from? I like to question everything. From a one hit wonder to a dance trend that rocked the world, the twist is an awesome dance to pick up quick!

The Twist began with hip kids on the street. In the 50’s Ray Anthony saw some San Francisco High schoolers doing their own conga, so he wrote the bunny hop to go with the moves. In the late 50’s Hank Ballard saw some kids twisting and gyrating, so he wrote the original version of the twist.

Chubby Checker and the Twist

You can’t talk about the twist without mentioning Chubby Checker. Born as, Ernest Evans and he was re-branded Chubby Checker by Dick Clark’s wife as a hat tip to Fats Dominoe.  After re-writing the twist at the request of Dick Clark for his show, the song and dance became a worldwide hit.

The twist hit the top of the billboards twice, once in 1960, then again in 1962. It inspired the Pony, Watusi, Mashed Potato, and Funky Chicken. Although they were not as popular as the twist, they featured a breaking away from traditional partnership dances.

How to Dance the Twist

The basic description is to stand with feet hip width apart with elbows bent and twist like you are grinding a cigarette out with both toes and pulling a towel across your behind.

Step 1 Twist center
twist both heals right and left with hands pulling forward and back in time to the music. For fun add an elevation change and get down low, then come back up.

Step 2 Twist right and left.

Shift weight to the left and twist with right foot tapping the ground or in the ait. Repeat to the right

Step 3 Toe heal swivel
Twist tapping right toe in, right heal out, step across slow. Repeat to the left.

Step 4 Twist turning right and left.
stand on your right foot turning to your right as you twist on one foot. Repeat to the left.

A little hocus pocus has become a Halloween tradition. Watching Hocus Pocus 1 and 2 is a fun and entertaining way to celebrate Halloween. I was inspired “One Way or Another” to create a Hocus Pocus line dance to celebrate with. Scare up a good time learning this fun dance.

Why Sanderson?

What was the inspiration for the Sanderson sisters? Their last name, Sanderson was a hat tip to the sandman who puts sand on children’s eyes to put them to sleep. The idea of someone slipping into his room scared screenwriter David Kirschner.

Why Three sisters?

What about the three sisters? According to MSN, they were based on the three fates. In Greek Legend the Moirai or three fates determined a person’s destiny. In Norse mythology these goddesses were referred to as the Norns. They were also referred to as Volvas, and described as witches who used a diststaff.

What is in a name?

Do you think there is there any history behind the names of the Sanderson sisters? Happily, yes. Sarah, in her sleeping beauty inspired princess pink dress, was the name of two of the witches at the Salem Witch Trials. Mary, the chef with a nose for children, was the name of two more of the women hanged at the Salem witch trials. That leaves Winnefred who was not hanged in Salem.

Winnefred the peacemaker?

This was not the first Winnefred to grace a Disney film. It had been used previously in the Jungle book and Mary Poppins. Winnefred’s character was a reference to the Celtic witches. One Irish legend from the 14th century is of the infamous witch Dame Alice Kyteler. After being tried for witchcraft successfully fled Ireland to live out her life. The English parliament passed the Witchcraft Act From 1542 until its repeal in 1735. Winnefred is a Celtic name of Welsh origin meaning blessed peacemaker, and fair. She did take advantage of being the fairest of them all. With Celtic red hair and a purple and green dress with symbols inspired by the rune alphabet and from Stonehenge, she was a sight.

Mother knows best?

In the Irish lore, it was said that witches could transform into wild animals and escape unnoticed. In Hocus Pocus 2 they took this legend and let Mother witch fly with this one. She took the form of a blackbird with red wings to keep an eye on things. The other fun legend was with Billy Butcherson. His costume was modeled after Ichabod Crain from Sleepy Hollow. He lost his head a couple of times with that revelation.

Spellbinding songs and dances.

Both Hocus Pocus movies were spellbinding. I had fun years ago filming a traditional dance to “I put a spell on you.” The second movie was such a fun film that I could not pass up the opportunity to take some of the moves and create a line dance to “One Way or Another.” Have an enchanting time learning this spellbinding line dance.

“One Way or Another” Hocus Pocus 2 Line Dance Description.

Do you want to kick up your heals at Mardi Gras? Great jazz music calls out to be danced to. So for Mardi Gras this year I did a line dance to the signature song “When the Saints go Marching in”, or “The Saints” for short.

Brief history of Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras dates back in time to the Middle Ages. It originated as the spring and fertility festivals of Saturnalia and Lupercalia. With the advent of the Christian faith, the festival was re-purposed as Carnival (from epiphany to lent), then in America as Mardi Gras (a one day event the Tuesday before lent), in preparation of the abstinence of Lent.

“The Saints” or “When the Saints Go Marching In” History

Mardi Gras is celebrated by parades, masks, beads, and great jazz. ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’, is unofficially the theme song for Mardi Gras in New Orleans. This traditional black spiritual song was made famous by Loui Armstrong in 1938. It is still played in the French quarter of New Orleans. It is the perfect tune to do a Mardi Gras “The Saints” Line dance.

Squirrels are a common part of life and a tool I use to teach with every day. For years my students have brought me squirrels and told me about famous squirrels like President Roosevelt squirrel Pete (for Pete’s sake), Marvel comics Squirrel girl, and recently Ratatoskr the Norse squirrel God. For Squirrel appreciation day I simplified Vahala Calling line dance for the Norse Squirrel God, Ratatoskr.

Norse squirrel God Ratatoskr

Norse mythology centers around the tree of life Yggdrasill. At the top is the eagle, and at the root is the serpent Níðhöggr. From treetop to root the squirrel Ratatoskr delivers messages from eagle to serpent and back again. This squirrel had appeared in Squirrel girl episodes, as well as in the game “God of War.” This makes Ratatoskr my top pick for famous squirrels to feature in my dance on Squirrel appreciation day Jan 21.

Valhalla Calling

In Norse mythology, Valhalla is the ancient hall where fallen Norse warriors spend their afterlife. The musical group “Miracle sound” was inspired by Vikings and the Norse legends. They spent copious time researching the Norse mythology to create this “composition that pays homage to Viking warriors and their quest for eternal glory.” It is also my inspiration for a Squirrel God line dance. I saw the Claudia Arndt line dance and was inspired to simplify it to fit my line dance class.

Valhalla Calling Ratatoskr Squirrel God Dance How To.

Begin with vocals 4 walls.

Section 1 tap, tap tripple.

Right foot tap forward tap side coaster step 1,2,3&4

Left foot tap forward tap side, hook side close turn ¼ to Left 5,6,7&8.

Section 2 Cha and Walk around turn ¼ to right.

Rt rock forward cha cha side ¼ to rt 1,2 3&4.

Lf Walk around turn ¼ turn scallop walk side close 5,6,7&8.

Section 3 toe heal coaster.

Rf 1,2 toe heal coaster step 3&4.

RF side rock 1,2 Cuban break Rf fwd. 3&4.

Repeat from the beginning.

What do Betty Boop, Felix the Cat and Quickstep have in common? They all originate from the 1920’s! To celebrate this awesome coincidence, I created the Betty Boop Catty Quickstep Line Dance How To. Have fun learning all about it below.

Quickstep history

The Quickstep dance was originally known as the ‘really fast Foxtrot, Charleston, Quickstep’. (Additionally, it borrowed from one-step and shag). This was too much of a mouthful to say so it was shortened to Quickstep. Even though the name shortened the steps did not, and to this day the quickstep has elements of the foxtrot, Charleston, and polka. Both Felix and Betty Boop bopped with a Charleston and fast foxtrot. Read more here.

Felix the cat history

Felix the cat was the first fully animated animal to hit silent films in 1919. He became hugely popular being featured in comic strips and film shorts. Many of his film shorts were more popular than the films that followed.  The name Felix is Latin for Lucky. Many organizations took Felix the cat as their lucky mascot.

Background on Betty Boop

Following Felix, on the movie screen was Betty Boop. In 1933 Betty Boop was featured in the first animated sleeping beauty, preceding Disney by 4 years. Unlike Minnie Mouse, Betty Boop played second fiddle to no one. Betty Boop was an archetype 1920’s baby faced flapper inspired by Helen Kayne. Just like Felix, patrons would flock to the films to see the Betty Boop cartoon short.

Felix and Betty Boop Together

In November 1984 Felix the Cat and Betty Boop joined forces. They were combined into a comic strip that ran until 1988.  Betty Boop was a working woman and Felix the cat was her pet (replacing Pudgy). Felix had bubbles with catty comments similar to Garfield.  This dynamic duo displayed the fun and frisky Quickstep line dance fabulously.

How To Dance Betty Boop Catty Quickstep Line Dance

First side commence with right foot.

1 ¼ turn to right:
Forward, side-close-side: The leader brings their right foot forward, quickly takes a step to the side with their left foot, and closes with their right foot, bringing their feet together. The next slow step—outward to the left—ends this first slow-quick-quick-slow movement.

2 Progressive chasse:
Back, side-close-side: The leader then steps back with their right foot, steps to the left with their left foot, closes their feet with their right foot, and steps to the side again with their left foot. This is the second slow-quick-quick-slow.

3 Forward lock:
Forward right foot, forward left foot left side leading, cross right foot behind left foot, forward left foot, count slow-quick-quick-slow.

4 ½ Natural Turn:
Forward Right foot, side left foot1/4 turn to right, Close Right to Left foot. count slow-quick-quick.

5 Spin turn:
Back left foot pivot 3/8 to right, forward right foot spin 1/8 to right, side left foot. Close right to left foot. count slow-slow-slow.

Charleston:
Back left foot, kick right foot, forward right foot, kick left foot. Repeat for count of 8.

Second side commence with Left foot

1 Step 1 ¼ turn to right:
Back side-close-side: left foot back, stepping to the right, closing with the left, and then stepping outward with the right. Count slow-quick-quick-slow.

2 Progressive chasse:
forward with the left, to the side with the right, closing with the left, and again going to the side with the right. Count slow-quick-quick-slow.

3 Backward lock:
Back left foot, back right foot, cross left infront of right foot, back right foot, count slow-quick-quick-slow.

The theatre is responsible for many dance crazes. In 1977 “Saturday Night Fever” began the disco dance craze. One of the dances to come out of this craze is the Brooklyn Shuffle Line dance to “Night Fever.” I put together this line dance how to for my line dance class.

Saturday night Fever background.

The plot for Saturday Night fever was based on an article by Nik Chon on the “Tribal rights of the new Saturday Night.”  The film captures how when you dance you leave the ordinary and become who you want to be. The urge to move and vibrate at a higher level is at our core. Film critic Siskel states “Travolta on the dance floor is like a peacock on amphetamines.” In addition, Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton wrote in their book “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life”: “The Bee Gees did for disco what Elvis Presley did for rhythm and blues they made it safe for white, straight, middle-class people” to dance. Have fun learning the Night Fever Brooklyn Shuffle.

Dance offs are so exciting. Puss & Boots and Kitty Soft paws do a highly entertaining dance off in both of their movies. Latin inspired music and fancy footwork make this fabulous. This inspired me produce this Puss in Boots Paso Doble Line Dance.

History of Puss in Boots

Stories of animal helpers are an ancient idea that cross all cultures. The first published version of Puss in Boots was an Italian tale called Cagliuso written in 1550. This animal helper is a female fairy cat who helped her master gain fame and fortune. By 1679 Charles Perrault published Puss in Boots as a tomcat committed to helping his master, the miller’s son, get the gold and the girl.  Ironically, I adopted the Miller’s cat, she got the boy, and lived happily ever after. Enchanting.

Don Quixote influences in Shrek Puss in Boots

The Shrek Puss in Boots is heavily influenced by Don Quixote. He is a cavalier fella who fights for chivalrous love. He is in love with adventure and helping others. The DreamWorks Adventures of Puss in Boots is spaghetti western style. In this series of short adventures Puss has feelings for Dulcinea. Dulcinea, meaning sweetness, is the made-up name of the woman that Don Quixote is infatuated with. The same name is used for the sweet kitty protecting San Lorenzo that Puss tries to protect from thieves. After many adventures, Puss must leave San Lorenzo to protect it. He leaves Dulcinea behind with her village to ride off into the sunset remembering her only as a dream, or unrequited love.

Cat woman and Kitty Softpaws

Kitty Soft Paws is the romantic interest of the feature film Puss in Boots. She is a clever thief who also sports boots. Very a likely a throwback to the original Italian puss in boots. In the Italian-speaking world, cunning is usually attached to a female cat. As Puss says, “Kitty? You are not as good as they say. You are better.” She is a well-groomed cat who is no damsel in distress. This clever kitty keeps her cool in tense situations as well as her sense of humor.  According to DreamWorks, her mask was inspired by Batman. Kitty’s talents were inspired by batman’s love interest, Cat woman.

History of the Paso doble

The paso doble has roots in the Fandango. This saucy folk dance was done by early gypsies and was banned in 1776. The Fandango and castanets were associated with disorder and rebellion. Once it could no longer be repressed, the Fandango became the influencer of Flamenco, Tango, and Paso Doble. Some historians claim that Paso Doble music dates to Spain in 1780. A French march dance called the Paso Redouble developed around the same time. By the 1800’s the Paso Doble music was used by bullfighters as they entered the ring. It resurfaced in southern France by the border to Spain in the 1920’s featuring the bullfighter and his cape as the theme for the dance.

Want a happy dance? The can-can is the iconic dance of Gay Paree. Even the cat Mewsette enjoyed this high stepping Parisian dance. So I put together some iconic can-can dance moves into a Gay Purr-ee cat can-can line dance.

Cat Can-Can:

Why a cat can-can? I was inspired by the cat can-can dancers at the Mewlan Rouge in the film “Gay Purr-ee.” Mewsette’s story is that of a French casket girl. Set in the gay 90’s, Mewsette goes from the country to a Paris finishing school, later to be sold as a mail order bride to a fat American cat.

Gay Purr-ee Connection:

Gay Purr-ee influenced and was influenced by other films. The Can-can scene in the song “Bubbles” is a hat tip to the 1960’s musical “Can-can.” Musette was then the inspiration for Duchess in the Disney version of the Aristocats. Both films were set in 1890’s France. These cats can dance!

Can Can History:

The can-can brings up scandal. The term cancan was French slang for scandal in 1830. The dance originated from a high-spirited gallop with additional kicks. In a period when a lady shouldn’t be caught breathless, or show her ankles, the can-can led to both. All efforts to suppress it failed. By the 1850’s there was a movement to embrace the can-can as acceptable.

Moulin Rouge Can-Can home:

By 1889 the Moulin Rouge dance hall opened. The Can-can became one of their featured dances. Ladies could now make a respectable living dancing the can-can at this legendary dance hall. Famous French painter, Lautrec made an advertisement for the Moulin Rouge of the famous can-can dancer Louise Webber.

The Can-can traveled from France to dance halls all over the world. In America it became a hit in the wild west. It remains today as the radio city Rockettes chorus line high kickers.

French Cat Can-Can Line Dance How To:

Step 1 Battement (kicks)-

Right knee up, down 4 ct, kick stomp left knee up, down, kick stomp 4 ct . Repeat right and left 8 ct.

Step 2 Rond de jamb (Leg circles)-

Right knee up circle right ankle In front count 1,2 lock step forward 3&4.

Left knee up circle right ankle In front count 5.6lock step forward 7&8.

Step 3 Polka step forward with Walk around Turn-

right foot tripple forward 1&2. Left foot tripple forward 3&4. Walk around turn right foot toward rotate 180 degrees to the left count 5, replace weight to left foot count 6, close feet7, swing hips back count 8.

Location:

We filmed at Adventures in Dance using the song “The French Can-Can Polka.” The background was photographed at the historic Silver Dollar Saloon across from the Tabor Opera house in Leadville Co. It opened in 1879 and has not changed much since then and reigns as the oldest bar in Leadville. This is the backdrop for our can-can cats.
