Disco Duck Phenomenon

So what’s the deal with Disco Duck? It’s a funky, quirky song that tapped into the spirit of its time and became a cultural phenomenon. It’s a reminder that music is meant to be fun, lighthearted, and entertaining. Disco Duck is a song that takes us back to the flashy, flamboyant, and funky era of 1976, when the disco craze was at its peak

Rick Dees

Rick Dees, the creator of Disco Duck, was a radio DJ who was looking to create a fun, lighthearted song that would get people moving on the dance floor. He drew inspiration from the popular disco songs of the time, but added his own twist – the quacking sound effects. The result was a song that was both a tribute to disco and a send-up of its excesses.

Dees was a shrewd businessman who knew how to market his song. He created a persona, Disco Duck, a charismatic performer who wore a bright yellow costume and platform shoes. The persona added to the song’s appeal, making it a must-see act in clubs and on TV shows.

Disco Duck’s Rise To Fame!

Disco Duck’s rise to fame was rapid and unexpected. It started getting airplay on local radio stations, then gradually made its way to the top 40 charts. By the fall of 1976, it had reached number one on the Billboard charts, knocking out other popular songs of the time.

Disco Duck’s reign at the top of the charts was short-lived, but its cultural impact lasted long after it fell off the charts. It became a symbol of the disco era, a reminder of the carefree, fun-loving spirit of the time. What a fun Throwback song to quack you up as your learn this line dance variation of this fun Disco hit.

History of Victorian Tea Dance

Victorian Tea Dancers

Victorian Tea Dancers

Tea with dance? Tasty and delightful! After a delightful afternoon tea with the Victorian Society of Colorado, I wanted to know more about Tea dances. Tea Dances trace their roots to the Victorian era.

Victorian Tea

The Victorian tea time stared in 1840 with Lady Ann the duchess of Belford. She would grow faint midday between breakfast and dinner. Lady Ann began having a spot of tea and a biscuit in the afternoon. Before long she was inviting friends to join her, including Queen Victoria, and the Victorian tea time was born.

Tea Dance

Tea dances trace their roots back to the French occupation of Morocco. In France they were called The Dasant and in German the Tanztee, translated dancing teas. Victorian TeaAn 1853 American publication made fun of the name The Dasant asking “Does tea dance? Can it dance?

Dancing Tea

By 1844 these dancing teas were popular in fashionable homes. Summer or autumn tea dances would be held between 4-7pm. Tea dances would commence with tea and refreshments like scones and Devonshire cream. Guests would move to the drawing room where furniture had been removed for carpet dances. Some households would stretch a polished sheet over the carpet, or roll up the rug to provide a better dance surface. A program of dances would be publicly displayed.

Carpet Dances

What are carpet dances you ask? They were the circle dances of the day. In 1815 English country dances were ousted by the Waltz, followed by other partnership

dances that turned in a circle. From 1844-1890 carpet dances included the Waltz, Galop, Two Step, and Polka. New dances like the Mazuka, Polonaise, Redowa and Shottiche were added later.

Tango tea

By 1890 a new dance craze was percolating. Tango was entering the dance scene. Dancing Times writes “The original tango may have been a voluptuous and indecorous dance. That does not prevent the present edition of it being decorous, refined and graceful…” The same journal states, “The ‘Tango’ is graceful, decorous and worthy of a place in any ballroom.”

End of Tea Dance

Tango teas dominated hotel tea rooms in the early 1900’s. Joining the tango at tea were other popular dances. Young people added dances like the Foxtrot, Charleston, Latin dance and Jive to the tea dance experience. Tea dances came to an end by 1939 when the glass ceiling of the Waldorf hotel was shattered during the war .

American Smooth Foxtrot-Popular dances for Social and Wedding DanceBallroom dance competition

The American Foxtrot is the most popular of the smooth dances. It’s smoothand syncopated moves lend itself to a variety of music. Beginning steps are simple and achievable for the novice dancer.

History:

The Foxtrot was originally considered a dirty dance, along with the other animal dances like the turkey trot and the grizzly. It originated it 1913 when a Vaudeville actor by the stage name of Harry Fox Trotted his American beauties ( the dolly sisters) between the acts of the Ziegfeld follies. He did this to Ragtime music, and later did It on the roof of the New York theatre. Arthur Murray embraced it and sold the first mail order dance lessons for the Foxtrot. Then Vern and Irene Castle took it overseas to Europe and introduced it to the Imperial society of teachers of dance.

20's

The Foxtrot is danced to slinky, jazzy American music in 4/4 time. It has an uneven rhythm with syncopated slows and quick’s at a tempo of 28-32 bars per minute . American Foxtrot utilizes the original Ragtime moves with the underarm turns and jazzy moves. It is immortalized by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in many films, with their side by side tap and jazz moves spinning effortlessly into and out of closed ballroom holds.

American Smooth Foxtrot Overview:

  1. A dirty Animal dance from the Ragtime era
  2. Most popular of the smooth dances
  3. simple and achievable for the novice dancer.
  4. 4/4 time 28-30 bars per minute

Weddings are full of romance and adventure as you and your future Mr. set out to plan the biggest party of your life. I do not know about you, but I did not even know where to start. So I bought every resource and studied them. And they all missed this one thing- Dancing

There were no resources to let me know what dance to learn or when to start lessons.  What do I do for my first dance? What suits my skills and personality? What do I do for the Mother/Son Father/Daughter dance? These used to be part of the fabric of our society(history of wedding dance) and common skills until they were banned with alcohol during the prohibition.  So here is what I have put together.

As the leaves turn gold, merchants in historic downtown Littleton gather in pods to discuss pumpkins. The annual Pumpkin follies and goat show

has begun. With one week to plan, pods like mine with the Center for the blind, the Crazy merchant and Adventures in dance gather together to plan a winning pumpkin pole.

With only one week to plan, gather supplies, and build out 14 ft. pumpkin sculpture, the heat is on. We planned a headless horseman. The center for the blind got to it and designed, built and painted the silhouette of a horse. The Crazy merchant got cobwebs, tombstones, and painted pumpkins. And Adventures in dance built the headless horseman.

With a chill in the air and rain on the horizon we gathered on Thursday morning to put together our creation. We even added light up eyes, and cried, “It’s alive” when we finished.   After a stormy night we gathered again to touch it up and meet and greet the judges. We met Greg Moody and a Mayor Dallas Hay from Sheridan. We tempted them with treats from the Crazy merchant. Things like cupcakes, pretzels and vitamin water, dance lessons and hugs from the center for the blind.  Later that night the results were posted on facebook.

The results are…

Getting Carried away, or why carry the bride over the threshold

Ballroom Dance Bride

Ballroom dance Bride carried away littleton

Keeping traditions is a great way to unite generations. And I love to know thehistory around wedding traditions. So I was curious about why the groom carries the bride over the threshold. Here are some of the interesting reasons for this custom.

  1. The bride had to be dragged from her father’s home and was dragged over the groom’s threshold
  2. Representing the groom stealing the bride away from her family
  3. To prevent evil spirits at the threshold from attaching to the bride
  4. To keep bad luck from entering the house if the bride were to trip on the threshold.
  5. To represent the bride’s purity on the way to consummate the union

Then custom continues even if the meaning is lost. Now it is just fun to be carried by your spouse into your new house. At the end of the first dance, it is a lovely addition to have the groom sweep the bride into his arms and carry her off the floor. This is a fun tip of the hat to this tradition.

Tossing your bouquet is another way to keep your dress intact. It seems that the tradition of tearing off a piece of the bride’s gown for good luck went a little too far, and the brides had to have accessories that she could dispose of to escape loosing her shirt. Tossing the bouquet allowed her to escape her guests as they chased after her flowers.

Modern weddings are not so revealing. Brides and grooms have the option of throwing the bouquet, raffling it, or giving it as a sign of friendship. It is your wedding, make it special to you. For more information check out http://www.AdventuresinDance.com
