Located in the lovely land of Lafayette, the Festival of Faerie is a fabulous experience. Creative experts gather to share their talents and raise funds for the arts at Sanchez Elementary School. 2023 was their 10-year anniversary and no threat of rain was going to stop them!

Beginning outside of festival square faeries paraded into town to crown their queen. This year Spring form Heather After Cosplay was graced with the crown. The crowning was celebrated with song, followed by dancing.

Dance at the 10th Annual Festival of Faerie

After the crowning all the Faeries danced a traditional Turkish Branle. Holly from Adventures in Dance Club taught the friends of Fae folk the fun steps and claps. Following this she gathered the group for the Puss in Boots Paso Doble line dance. In honor of the mermaids, she taught the Samba Line dance to “Under the Sea.” For the scallywags and seafarers, Holly taught a line dance Tango to He’s a pirate. With all this great dancing they were ready to lose a shoe, so she did a Waltz line dance to “so this is love.”

At noon Catterfly and the Tribal Misfits Fusion Belly dancers took the stage. Clio the Catterfly had been the 2022 queen of Faerie. Her troupe flew in with a flourish of colorful scarves and entertaining routines.  The troupe of Tribal Misfits Fusion Belly dancers brought a bright spot to the festival stage.

It was almost a gloomy end with many hours of cloudy skies. When the clouds cleared Crixa, Orchid, and Blossom had a great time dancing in the Queen’s tent. It was the happiest rainless dance of the day.

Other Enchanted Entertainment.

Between dance segments talented musician Stace Johnson graced the stage. His expertise in songwriting and entertainment made merry of a grey and rainy day. He had everyone clapping and jumping to his jubilant tunes.

Next to his tent were face painters, vendors, and pixies tripping through the square. Next to the queen’s tent was the book faerie with books for all to read. Tomas O’Dreams, the leprechaun had magic and fun, with an interactive experience for children to explore. Many Fae came out at the end of the day to display their finery for the costume contest. All is well that ends well at the Festival of Faerie.

What better way to celebrate the holidays than with a dance performance. The staff and student at Adventures in Dance had a great tie gathering for the 2022 Winter showcase and Dinner Dance.

Superb student Routines

Everyone did a better than average job of showing off their latest dance moves. Newcomer dancers Tim and Nikki Herrin kicked off the day with their Rumba Tango segue routine. They danced to “Rum is the Reason” and “He’s a Pirate.” It was a very entertaining way to begin the day.

Seasoned dancer Melvin Marcusson danced a frisky Foxtrot. He used the seasonal hit, “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” To tie into the Whoville feal, Holly donned Martha May Whovier’s Christmas gown as Mel donned a Grinchy hat. It was a very entertaining number.

video

Kevin and Valerie took the floor next. They danced a romantic Waltz to Candle on the Water. It was full of fun moves they learned on their dance cruise. They performed their best yet.

Kicking up their heals for a rockus Quickstep were Larry and Sheryl Gray. Larry chose a toe tapping hit with “Bad Moon Rising.” They hipped, hopped and skipped across the floor without missing a beat. Very entertaining as always

Feelin’ good is an understatement for the Dunbar’s. They danced a fabulous foxtrot to Michael Buble’s “Feelin’ Good” Full of fun figures Linda looked up it was a fabulous routine. We are looking forward to their next creation.

Ending each set was Jessica Virgo. Her first routine was a fast and flashy Cha-Cha. She was sporting neon green fringe and enough bling to put your eye out. Well danced through and through. The other Latin dance, Tango was her feature for the second set, sporting a lovely black and teal dress she strutted like a peacock across the floor. Fabulous as always.

video

Closing the show was Craig & Holly Tomazin. They debuted a new routine and dress. Dancing night club two step to “That’s How You Make a Man” Holly spun across the floor in her stunning scrap heap special. This gold and black leopard print dress was finished the night before.

Delicious Dinner

Dinner was delicious as always. Dining on Brisket with glazed carrots, baked beans, Build your own Sweet Potato Casserole (Marshmallow cream fluff, whipped honey cinnamon butter, marshmallows, crunch topping. Build your own salad, lettuce, tomato, cumber, onion, eggs, peas, carrots, cheese and variety of dressing. Dessert bar of pumpkin and peach praline pies with whipped topping.

As Mel told me, it was a great show. Everyone had fun dining, dancing, and performing for each other. Be sure to join us next time.

Adventures in Dance loves to gather with students to share their latest routines for the holidays. Sunday December 12th dancers were happy to gather to share their latest dances. After dancing everyone had fun dining and sharing their performance experience.

Top Newcomer Rumba:

Newcomers Bill and Kim danced their rumba. It was a routine they were working on for a church performance. The original date was delayed so they seized the opportunity to share their routine at Adventures in Dance. They pulled it off without a hitch.

Second Chance Bolero:

Seasoned dancers Kevin and Valerie took this opportunity to share their Bolero. They had been working on it before the shut down and took this opportunity to dust off their moves. They did a delightful job of showing off all their beautiful bolero moves.

Veteran Foxtrot:

Long time dancer and everyone’s favorite WWII veteran Melvin tripped the light fantastic with his frisky foxtrot. Melvin uses showcases to keep from forgetting all the dances he has spent a lifetime learning. He combined his silver American smooth foxtrot with his international foxtrot for a delightful Christmas routine.

Stunning Swing:

Last were veteran dancers Larry and Sheryl, having some fun with a little swing. Larry wanted some new moves to help his swing feel fresh, and Sheryl had a new dress to kick up her heals in. Always entertaining, they skipped merrily through their routine.

Romantic Rhythm Routines:

Between sets advanced dancers entertained. Jessica shared her new American bolero and rumba routines. Despite alternating injuries for both Craig and Jessica, they both did an amazing job with their dances. It was a great opportunity to get ready for competitions in the future.

Dickens Victorian Inspired Routines:

Holly and Craig took this opportunity to share some historic dances. After having run the Fezziwig dance hall for the Dickens Experience in Denver this year, they shared their show from this event. During breaks they taught fun Victorian English country dances like the Sir Roger De Coverley, and a French Country Dance. For their show they shared a historic, landler, and Bohemian Polka. These were then contrasted with the modern Waltz, and Viennese Waltz.

v

Dinner and Dancing

Once the dancing was done, dinner was served. Everyone had fun dancing and dining as they shared what they had worked on this year. We loved sharing this experience with everyone and look forward to many more.

Do you love rockabilly? I am finding I have an affinity for the fabulous 50’s dances and retro culture. The team from Adventures in Dance had the pleasure of teaching dance at the Hot Rod Rock & Rumble this year. Our show was rained out, but that did not stop up. We came home and filmed our show to share with you.

Take and adventure, a retro dance adventures, back to the 50’s for a rockabilly dance experience with the team from Adventures in dance with Holly, Craig & Jessica. It is a fun journey back in time to the popular dances of the 1950’s. Pared with popular dances are historic songs, and rockabilly hits. Read on for more fun history and dance.

Rumbas from the 50’s

Bali Hai is a mythical island in the musical South pacific. This song premiered onstage in 1949, then again in the 1958 movie version of South Pacific. This song bridges from the end of the 40’s to the end of the 50’s. The American rumba was championed by Xavier Cugot in 1929 and taught by Arthur Murray. But it took off internationally in 1955 when Frenchman Pierre with his partner Lavelle brought it to France.

Latin music became a craze in the 1950’s. By 1955 Pierre Lavelle established the Cuban rumba. Rockabilly band Boppin B does an awesome take on the classic Cuban rumba beat in their song “The earth stood still.”

Beautiful Bolero

Besame Mucho, or kiss of fire was written by a young lady who had never been kissed before. It was made famous in 1956 by Trio Los Panchos and covered later by Dean Martin. Recognized as the most recorded Mexican song in the world, it is also the most popular bolero music to dance to. Trio Las Panchos promoted the popularity of the Bolero in the 1940’s and it continued into the 50’s.

Ga-ga for Cha-Cha

In the 1950’s America was ga ga for Cha-Cha. By 1959 Sam Cooke’s biggest hit was “Everybody likes to Cha-Cha”, which was inspired by a Christmas party he attended. While at the party a Cha-Cha began, and someone yelled out “everybody Cha-Cha!” and the rest is history.

Vintage Viennese Waltz

World renowned song “That’s amore” was commissioned by Jerry lee Louis for Dean Martin to sing in the 1952 movie “The Caddy.” Although it was never a hit, it continues to be played today. It is an iconic Viennese waltz that never goes out of style.

Who is the Boss of Foxtrot?

Love stories never go out of style. Ann-Margaret and Elvis Presley fell in love during the filming of Viva Las Vegas and recorded a Duet “You’re the Boss.” It was then cut for being too sexy. Blues inspired foxtrots can get a little sexy as well. We will not cut our foxtrot for its alluring qualities.

Can’t tell a Waltz from a Tango?

Alma Cogan was known for her United Kingdom single hits in the 1950’s. Following the popularity of the Blue Tango, in 1954 Alma recorded “I Can’t Tell a Waltz From A Tango”, truly rockabilly with a twist. The Tango dates back to 1857, but really took off in popularity in the 20’s with Rudolph Valentino’s “4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” That popularity did not cool during the 50’s as they continued to produce iconic tango music for dancing.

Line Dancing Rockabilly Stroll

Merging the past with the present is what makes the Rockabilly stroll a great dance. It combines the best of the past with pieces from the bop, the stroll, and the Chalypso into one great line dance. Have a hip cat happy time dancing this rockabilly favorite.

Rock that Waltz

Who ever heard of a Rock and Roll Waltz? Kay Starr did. After leaving capitol records for RCA Kay Starr struck a Number 1 single hit in 1955 with the “Rock and Roll Waltz.” Waltzes have survived the test of time and are a great 50’s go to.

Hot Tequila Mambo

Do you like Cuban Tequila? The song hit #1 in the billboards in 1958 from a rockabilly jam session with Dave Burgess and released by Challenge Records by the band “The Champs” The mambo was quick and fast like a shot of “Tequila”.

Swing with a Stray Cat Jive

What hip cat would not like to cut a rug with a jumpin Jive swing? The Stray cats made their mark with this rockabilly hit, “Stray Cat Strut”. B-bopping Swing and Jive were full of hot dance moves for 50’s hip cats.

Thank you to the Hot Rod Rock & Rumble for inviting us to share our fabulous 50’s dance show with them. We had a great time teaching dance to their guests and look forward to doing it again. Out dance adventure performance team featured Jessica Virgo, Holly Tomazin, and most appreciated, Craig Tomazin. Join us for more fun dances!

Sunday afternoon students sporting stellar gowns gathered at Adventures in Dance for the Summer Showcase. Everyone had been working hard polishing their solo’s, and it really showed. We are so proud of how everyone danced.

Dance Newcomers

Three newcomer ladies graced the floorboards for the first time. First up was Rhonda Underhill with a wonderful new Waltz routine to the song “At this moment.” She was a vision in navy blue chiffon.

The next newcomer was Jana Clarke. Sporting a navy-blue sparkle transition ballgown, she flew around the floor. Her Viennese Waltz was to “Cowboy’s Like Us.”

Last, but certainly not least to dance was Maureen Mallon. She got in the corona spirit and danced to “Coronavirus” spoof song. Her West Coast Swing slid across the floor with grace and style.

Experienced Dance Couples

Next, we had two experienced couples dancing a couple of well-rehearsed routines. Leading both sets were Larry & Sheryl Gray. Pivoting in a purple Latin dress, this dynamic duo started the first set with a scintillating Tango to “S.O.S.” Next wearing something in blue, the Gray’s danced a Waltz to their wedding song, “Can I Have This Dance For The Rest of My Life?”

Expressing great emotion Kevin Rudolph and Valerie Wassill strode onto the floor. Wearing a beautiful black and white feathered dress, Valerie brought flirting to a new level as she and Kevin danced their frisky Foxtrot to “Juke-Box.” After a change into a black and blue fringe dress, this expressive couple tangled in a Tango to “Cat Tango.”

Marvelous Melvin

Last of all seasoned veteran Melvin Marcusson took the floor. Donning a dandy boater hat he was ready to dance Foxtrot with Holly in her blue Edwardian dress. “You’re a Tramp” from the live action movie “Lady and The Tramp” was his song choice. He stole the show with his endearing routine.

Staff Dance

Between sets the staff shared their Latin and Rhythm set. They had scintillating Rumbas, beautiful Bolero’s, cheeky Cha-Cha’s, marvelous Mambo, and a jumping Jive. Not having changed costumes enough, they lengthened their hems for a smooth set, including Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Tango.

Dinner on the town

When the last award was handed out, everyone was ready for dinner. Delighted dancers headed into downtown Littleton to dine at smoking fins. Fabulous food and good friends finished a great afternoon with a great meal.

Superbowl weekend is a super start for competition ballroom dance. The Denver Dancesport Jam is the hottest ballroom dance event to start the year in Colorado. Dancers from Adventures in dance were prepared to do their best in competiton ballroom dance.

Rhythm & Club dances with Melvin

The day started off with American Rhythm dance. Seasoned veteran Melvin Marcusson rocked his single dance entries. He danced his Cha-cha, Rumba, Swing, Bolero, Mambo, West Coast Swing, Hustle, Samba, Night club 2 step, Salsa, and Merengue. He took all first places for his dancing. Not bad for someone over 90 yrs. old.

Swing Solos with Craig

Craig was proud to bring two newcomer solos to the dancesport jam. The first was Rhiannon Tran. She rocked her newcomer bronze swing routine. Next was Rachel Prezkuta. Rachel was a seasoned dancer having dances showcases before. She shook things up with her swing shimmies. Both girls did an awesome job with their dancing getting scores over 90 from all the judges.

Smooth Ballroom with Jessica

Later in the afternoon things began to pick up when Jessica Virgo hit the floor with style.  She rocked her open American smooth single dances. She then repeated her stellar performance in the evening with a 1st place in the smooth open multi dance. For the open smooth scholarship, she was excited to take 3rd. It was an exciting performance.

Standard, Smooth & Latin with William

William hooker danced 3 styles of multi dance in the evening. First up was his open international standard dances, the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot and Quickstep. Next, he danced his open American smooth dances, the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz. With a quick costume change William was ready to rock his international Latin dances, the Cha-cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive. It was a great run with many new accomplishments.

Competition Ballroom Dance Comes to An End

At the end of the evening the Adventures in dance team presented the history of Samba. It was a fun demonstration of where the Samba came from. Jessica as Carmen Miranda was an absolute hit. When the last dance was done everyone was ready to go home. If you missed this year be sure to mark your calendar and join us next year.

Weddings are wonderful events to plan, and bridal shows are the best place to see a large variety of services. The Rocky Mountain Bridal Show is the best of the Colorado bridals shows. You can find everything you need to plan your wedding in a one stop.

Bridal show booths

There were DJ’s to dance studios displaying their wares at the 2020 Rocky Mountain Bridal Show. Adventures in Dance was proud to have an outstanding opportunity to share about wedding dance with brides. Many a happy couple stopped to share their dancing dreams with us.

Wedding dance show

Prior to the runway show Adventures in Dance put on a wedding dance performance. Featuring fun possibilities for every style of wedding dance the dancers tripped lightly up and down the red-carpet runway. It was a fun way to explore the options for wedding dancing.

Salsa to Viennese Waltz

Hot Havana nights were the theme for the first dance. A steamy salsa burned the floor for the first dance. Holly Tomazin and William Hooker had fun demonstrating this Latin dance. Next was a Harry potter inspired wizards waltz. This traditional Viennese waltz was a throwback to traditional wedding dance. Spinning across the floor were Craig & Holly Tomazin.

Cha- Cha to Foxtrot

In the 50’s America was ga-ga for cha-cha. So, the Adventures in Dance team performed a cheeky cha-cha to ‘Represent Cuba’. William and Holly were tearing up the floor. Next was a flirty foxtrot to ‘Jacob’s Deli’ from Fantastic Beasts. Craig and Holly cut a rug with this blues inspired dance.

Traditional to Rocking First Dance

A slow and sexy rumba to ‘Believe in Magic’ stole the show. Sliding romantically across the floor William and Holly told a love story to this Goblet of Fire hit. A wonderful waltz was up next to ‘Nevilles’ Waltz’. Light and lyrical moves were performed by Craig & Holly. To close the show, it was a rocking Jive to ‘Do The Hippogriff’.

Dancing your way

Designing dream dances is the desire of the instructors at Adventures in dance. It is a privilege to provide options to fit the individual needs, wants and desires for every wedding couple. From the first dance to the last we love to find what fits you. The 2020 Rocky Mountain Bridal Show was a delightful opportunity to share possibilities with the public.

Witches and Wizards blew in from all over Colorado to attend the Harry Potter Yule Ball. The ball was held at the Longmont Museum Saturday January 4th. Performers from Adventures in Dance were invited to share their Fantastic Beasts Ballroom dance show.

Wizards Waltz Lesson

The wizarding world gathered at 5:30 pm to learn how to do Minerva McGonagall’s Yule Ball Waltz. Holly dressed as Queenie Goldstein directed guests in how to dance the Waltz. Hagrid even joined the fun dancing with Jessica dressed as Tina Goldstein.

Fantastic Beasts Ballroom Show

Once the formalities were finished, it was time for a Fantastic Beasts Ballroom Show. The Harry Potter Yule Ball began with the wizard’s Waltz. Craig as Jacob Kowalski demonstrated the “Harry Potter Waltz” with Jessica as Tina Goldstein. Next up were those dastardly death eaters with a Tango to die for. Holly and William danced the “Death Eater Tango” with pieces of a Paso Doble and an American Tango. On the lighter side, Jacob and Tina tripped the light fantastic with a fabulous Foxtrot to “Jacob’s Deli.”

Harry Potter Yule Ball Show

A romantic rumba with Queenie Goldstein and Newt Scamander to “Magic Works” from the goblet of fire was a hit. “Neville’s Waltz” swept across the floor with Craig & Jessica as Jacob and Tina. And for the finally, a rocking Jive to “Can you Dance Like a Hippogriff”

Wizards Grand March

Following the last bow muggles and magic folks gathered to kick off the social dancing with a grand march. Hand in hand guests followed the easy directions of Queenie Goldstein assisted by Newt Scamander. Beautiful formations were created up and down the floor.

Divination & Owl’s

In addition to dancing there were other experiences to be had. Next to the ballroom was the raptor rescue with Hedwig’s owl education. Down the hall divinations were offered. Young witches and wizards would tell your future based on your wand. If you were lucky you may even run into a traveling magician.

Potions & Portions

On the side was the great hall with drinks and dining options. Across the wall was the magical creature’s museum. Then in the middle were demonstrations of herbology and potions. Willing wizards and witches did daring experiments right before your eyes.

The holidays bring out the best in everyone. So, the students at Adventures in dance brought out their best dance moves for the Nutcracker Ball showcase. From Waltz to swing, students had fun strutting their stuff.

Nutcracker Ball Waltz Set

After dancers warmed up their moves, guests took their seats for the opening set.  In a very Victorian manner, the first dance performed was a slow waltz. Couples included Larry & Sheryl Gray, Kevin Rudolph & Valerie Wassill, and Melvin Marcusson with Holly Tomazin. Melvin got to take his seat as the remaining couples then took a turn dancing a Viennese Waltz.

Nutcracker Ball Spanish set

The second set delved into Latin dance. The dance of the Spanish bullfighter, Paso Doble started the second set. Strutting their stuff were Shayao & Sabrina McFarland dancing with Craig Tomazin & William Hooker, and Melvin with Holly. Shayao & Sabrina remained on the floor for a Jumping Jive routine.

Swing Solo

Solo’s are a great way to work on your dance to your favorite songs. Craig Tomazin’ s new student Rhiannon Tran delighted the audience with her swing solo.  She rocked a red fringe dress with a lovely rose in her hair.

Nutcracker Ball Latin Set

The third set went south of the border. Sporting a cheeky Cha-cha Shayao & Craig performed opposite Sabrina & William. Melvin & Holly then joined them for a romantic Rumba to finish this set.

Nutcracker Ball Samba Set

Everyone was enchanted with the Samba this year. All our couples took to the floor to demonstrate their hot Brazilian moves. Levels varied from bouncing Bronze to grand Gold moves. Everyone had a great time dancing together.

History of Samba Show

When the last award was given to gracious dancers, the staff took the floor. This year the show was the history of Samba. Starting with the Victorian era Maxie to the Samba as we know it today Adventures in Dance put on an entertaining show.

Dinner

The afternoon was full of nutcracker themed appetizers. Clara’s ciders and teas, Nutcracker’s nuts & seeds, Mouse King’s cheese and crackers, and Sugar Plum Fairy’s fruits and sugar plums. With the last dance completed it was time to dine on delicacies. Dinner included Peppered beef with rice, a hearty minestrone soup with sausage, spinach salad with warm bacon dressing. For dessert we had a white chocolate and strawberry Christmas tree. No one left hungry.

On small business Saturday Airship Iron Opal’s Bizarre bizarre was held at the Best Western Hotel in Loveland Colorado. Bizarre steampunk wonders could be found with wonderous vendors and creative steampunk events. The admission was a gently used book to be donated to libraries who had been devastated by disaster and needed replenished.

Airship Iron Opal Bizarre Bizarre

Airship Iron Opal’s Bizarre bizarre opened with vendor displays. Artists and tinkers made their wares available for holiday purchase. You could find dragons, dice, books, and creations of all shapes and sizes. Adventures in Dance’s own William Hooker provided anime character art for a very reasonable price.

Tea Dueling

The morning tea duel was a delight. Captain Vonie of the Airship Iron Opal laid down the rules for the social tea duel. After the tea was poured, duelers chose their weapons of chessman shortbread cookies. The Airship captain directed them to dip their cookies into the tea for the count of three, then to hold them up until the last possible moment before they dissolved. She directed them to consume the cookie with a clean nom before it dissolved but after their opponent consumed theirs. This was truly entertaining.

Parasol Dueling

Later in the day there was another duel. Parasol dueling led by Holly Collins-Tomazin of the Steam powered Ballroom.  This is the ladylike form of rock, paper, scissors using a parasol. The positions become the plant (rock), the twirl (paper) and the snub (scissors). They began with the lightning rounds to get familiar with the rules. Then they progressed on to faking your opponent out with hitting the three positions for the count of 5. Last ladies over 18 participated in advanced parasol flirtations. It was very fun.

Steam powered Ballroom Show

Late in the afternoon the Steam powered ballroom from Adventures in dance took the floor. They presented a lain set of steampunk themed dances. They performed a Samba to “The Shape Of You,” Cha-cha to “Fighting Trousers”, Paso Doble to “In Her Majesty’s Service” a Rumba to “Havana” and closed with a Jive to “Sing, Sing Electro Swing.”

Electro Swing

After the show the team-taught guests how to dance the electro swing. This steampunk invention uses parts of the Charleston and popping. It was a blast, and everyone enjoyed dancing.

Come back next year

This was a delightful benefit and shopping experience. Mark your calendar to do some holiday shopping as you help others next year. We will look forward to doing this again.
