Receptionist and Aerospace inspector Soar with their first dance.

We met Zach Maxwell and Jillian Checkley at The Rocky mountain Bridal Show and right then and there we knew there was something special about them. This couple was determined and Passionate about landing there first dance and sure enough they did. On February 9^th 2019 Zach and Jillian Swayed there audience with there dance to “Pushin up Daisies” by Brothers Osborn at the Silverthorne Pavilion. We couldn’t be prouder.

Counselor and Electrician get swept up in their wedding dance

On February 23 2019 LJ Reiner and Allyson West tripped the light fantastic at the Barn in Evergreen. They started three months in advance of their wedding so they had time to practice what they were learning for their first dance. LJ and Allyson chose to dance a frisky foxtrot to “perfect” by Ed Sheeran. They practiced long and hard and it all paid off. They nailed their first dance. May they dance happily into the future.

Do you love Game of Thrones? Brooklyn Tensla and James Kimey are fans of Game of Thrones, so they picked the opening theme for their wedding dance. To make the most of their first dance, they began their lessons 9 months in advance of the wedding. The theme to Game of thrones is a dramatic Viennese waltz. So we customized historic dance pieces from the middle ages to fit their skills and theme. As they progressed James brought his mom in to work on the mother son dance as well. She had a delightful time learning to rhythm dance to “What a wonderful world.” It was not enough for this wonderful couple to have a dramatic first dance. They also worked on some swing so they could dance the night away at Bella Serra on December 15, 2018.

Vet and Web Designer Plan out an aw-inspiring first dance.

This is a Dedicated and Empowered couple if we have ever seen one. Jonathan Lipinski and Kristi Falk came to us wanting to learn how to dance to “Thinking out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. We put together a performance there audience will remember for years to come. They danced a Foxtrot on December 22^nd 2019 and look forward to many years of happiness to come.

On January 20^th 2019 Ryan Gray and Katharine Brewer glided onto the dance floor for there first dance. Everyone at The Courtyard Denver Cherry creek was amazed to see how much they had worked on there dance. They started two months in advance of their wedding so they felt comfortable and confident for their first dance. Ryan and Katharine chose to dance a Brisk Box to “perfect” by Ed Sheeran. They practiced long and hard and it all paid off.

Many look at Ballroom as a stuffy and outdated dance style that can in no way compete with the upbeat pace of today’s solo dance styles. That didn’t stop Chris Cruz and Amanda though, they went above and beyond to deliver a memorable first dance to the theme of Jurassic Park for there first dance. They performed the foxy the day of November seventeenth, 2018, and it went off without a hitch. I’ve seen many couple come though the studio, but I will always remember the smiles on the faces of Chris and Amanda when they found out that they could and would land the perfect first dance for there wedding. Cheers to them as they spend their honey moon in Italy.

Mark and Jordan Tie the knot with a box

With a wedding coming fast and a need to dance Mark Terhaar and Jordan Dierkens set there sites on the box. Little did they know this step would launch them forward to do a heart wrenching and romantic first dance there guests would soon not forget. They danced to “I don’t dance” by Lee Brice. On November 17^th 2018 they hit the floor and nailed each step, just as they are to nail each step they take together, in this journey we call life.

Weddings are full of something old, and something new. Many wedding traditions are being re-imagined for today. Traditions like cutting the cake, or the bride being escorted down the aisle by her father are traditions most often kept. But what is the top wedding tradition that couples keep? The first dance!

According to a Wedding Wire survey 92% of couples choose to do a first dance. That makes the first dance the most important wedding tradition to keep. Of the couples surveyed, one in four couples choose a country western song to dance to.

History of the first dance wedding tradition

Wedding dances can be traced to antiquity. The Kalamatianos (link) or Greek kerchief dance features in my big fat Greek wedding was one of the earliest wedding dances. Since then the first dance has been included at formal gatherings to respect the guest of honor. At a wedding the bride and groom are the guests of honor.

During the Victorian era, the Waltz (link) became the most popular dance to begin any ball. Disney capitalized on this tradition by giving many of his princesses’ waltzes. Just think of Sleeping beauty (link), Beauty and the Beast (link), and of course Cinderella (link). Today the first dance is the first embrace as man and wife in your public profession of your undying love for one another.

With the advent of social media, trends can catch on like wild fire. The traditional Waltz is still the most requested wedding dance. This time-honored tradition is an elegant choice. Next are Foxtrots (link), then in order Rumba (link), the Night club two step (link), and swing (link).

New wedding dance tradition

Can’t decide on only one dance? Mashups are a fun way to shake up a party. Many couples are opting to start with a slow song then cut midway into something upbeat with a change of song. Mashups are great, however they take twice as long as a single dance to learn (link). This is because you are learning more than one style of dance and need transitions from one song to the next. For those adventuresome souls, every moment is worth it.
