Marketing couple sell their first dance

David Staley is in Apartment Marketing and Nicole Brennan is in advertising. While they did come to us with no dance experience, they soon unlocked a hidden talent that they themselves didn’t know they had in dance.  With the help of Holly, they pulled out a night club 2 step at there reception that wowed every gest in attendance. May their song “Beyond by Lean Bridges” forever be in their hearts as they honeymoon in Costa Rica.

Joyful June wedding

Both Curtis Bentley an operations manager and Erin Dunn a admin assistant was bound and determined to nail there first dance on June 15th. This couple has the gusto to accomplish whatever they set their minds to and decided to do a Box to “Beauty and the Beast.” With some help from Holly and a lot of effort they shook up their reception at The Cherokee Ranch and Castle. Now able to relax at their honeymoon in Italy.

Business owners Own their wedding dance

Here is a truly passionate and dedicated pair of dancers. Both Christine Kopec and Mark Ashland run their own small businesses and understood that learning a new skill could take some time. So, they put there minds to a goal and succeeded in crafting there waltz with the help of Holly. They danced to “I chose You” on June 15th at the Arrowhead Golf club. This wonderful pair, now able to rest, honeymooned in the Grand Canyon and go on succeeding to this day.

Stockbrokers make it big at there Reception.

Elizabeth Cogswell and Matthew Schick were planning for there wedding June 28th, luckily, they had the forethought to schedule some dance classes well ahead of time. They had picked there first song and walked the floor of the studio ready and willing to nail there first dance. After some deliberation with their teacher they Decided on a Box and began their path to greatness. When that special day came, they danced divinely to their song “Yours by Russell Dickson” amid the beautiful greenery at Hudson Gardens.

Jubilant July Wedding dance

Alex Marretta and Chris Reddersen are a pair of hard-working dancers. They came to us and decided they wanted to do a box to their song “Something just like this the acoustic version by Missy and Blond.” Then on July 1st in Durango Colorado they gave a stunning performance at there reception. They later retired to their honeymoon cruise and have been happy dancers since.

Fabulous Foxtrot and Scintillating swing all in one night

Megan Sprot and Dan Baginski had big plans for there wedding on July 20th. They weren’t just going to learn something for there first dance, Megan also wanted to do a Foxtrot with her father daughter dance. So they set a plan with both Holly and Robyn and came up with a Peppy swing to “You belong to me by Bryan Adams” and a slow foxtrot to “Your my best friend by Queen.” The crowd went wild at Bearner Ranch community park and the two of them couldn’t be happier.

Technicians Step into a wistful Box

Chelsea Woodrum & Marek Romanowski are both technicians in their respected fields, it for Marek and X-Ray for Chelsea, due to this they were a bit hesitant at first to learn there first dance. However, with the help of Holly and some good old-fashioned elbow grease they put together something really special for their wedding on July 12th. They Performed a marvelous Box for them after party to there song “Everything by Michael Buble” in the beautiful Pine Colorado.

Beautiful couple gets swept up in their dance

Ariel Banos & Chhin Sun, a recreational therapist and a sports reporter, at long last planned to get married on July 20th. They were a bit unsure about doing there first dance but with help of Robyn they found them selves swept up in there dancing. Together they built a beautiful swing to “Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers.” When the magical day come at Grant Humphreys Mansion not a single person in the crowd had a dry eye throughout their whole dance.

Computer programmer Builds a marvelous first dance

Both Christina Laan an RN and Michael Lockwitz a computer programmer were bound and determined to build their first dance by July 13th. With some help from Holly they build a dance that shook the very foundations of their reception at The Boettcher mansion. They decided on a Box to their song “Better together by Jack Jhonson” Now able to relax at their honeymoon in Thailand.

Students forever in dance and life

Dancing on Friday July 12th Westby Mize & Maria Diaz Illuminated their wedding day. This Dynamic Duo danced both a box and a Merengue to “Book of life and Swavamente.” This couple worked relentlessly practicing day and night in the studio. Holly couldn’t be prouder, here’s to them and may they have a wonderful time in Turks and Caicos.

All Encompassing August wedding

Eric Grafton & Lacey Schwartz decided it was important to plan for their first dance. So, they took the time to come into Adventures in dance to work something out with Holly so there first dance on their many days together could be that much more special. Together they put together a smooth foxtrot to “Mango Tree” by Zac Brown, we couldn’t be prouder. By August 18th this Nurse and software engineer swept away their reception at the arrowhead Golf course. Now this beautiful couple rests in Paris having accomplished what they set out to do.

Shy Couple Breaks into a marvelous first dance

Ashley Delants is a bright and peppy EDI Liaison & Andrew Johannes a quiet but Strong Suit Drafter. When they came to us there were a bit concerned on how well they could dance. But due to some background in hockey and a lot of trust in one another they pulled through and made a beautiful first dance. With some help from William they made a slow and romantic Foxtrot to their song “True Colors” by Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick. On August 17th they wowed their crowd and to this day are happier by the minute.

PA’s create a marvelous first dance

Jp Halfen & Laura Snyder came together and decided to put together something elegant for their first dance on August 11th. With some help from Craig they decided that a Box was going to work best for them and their song. We guided them through the Ups and downs of their dance and by the end they were swooning to there song “Can’t help Falling in love” by Haley R. The crowd was blown away with their hard work and effort. They later retired to their Honeymoon in Mexico.

Domestic Engineer and Hvac Tie the knot

Nick Bairel & Jessica Cranson have shared numerous feelings for one another for a while. They knew it was time to get some help making a fantastic first dance. They had decided that “When you say nothing at all” by Allison N. was going to be the perfect song and with some help from Craig they made a beautiful first dance. Together they worked hard and practiced harder to be prepared for their wedding on August 3rd.

Creative minds have a Ball at there first dance

Kenna Witt may be a crackpot Engineer, but she was surprised by what she and her fiancé Mike Matz could do on the dance floor on her wedding day. Luckily, she enlisted the help of adventures in dance and was able to put together a fantastic first dance her family wouldn’t soon forget. Together with holly they put together a beautiful Foxtrot to “Speechless” by Dan and Shay. They rocked their dance on August 3rd at the boulder country club. After there success they retired to Italy have achieved all they wanted and more.

Weddings reflect each person’s unique style. Recently Indian inspired weddings have risen in popularity. My wedding dance couple Andy and Andrea tied the knot with their own Indian inspired wedding.

Blended wedding

indian wedding happy dance

Andy is from India by birth, and Andrea is part Indian. When they fell in love at work, they decided to incorporate their Indian heritage into their wedding. They wanted a blended cultural wedding that reflected their joy in vibrant colors.

East meets west wedding gown

Gold indian groom, red wedding gown

Andrea created her own blended gown. She chose a “lehenga” style with a long blouse. Then she added a western mermaid skirt with net petticoat. Bur her creativity did not stop there. She was drawn to colorful Indian wedding colors, so Andrea commissioned from India a vibrant red and antique gold adorn her gown. Over the shoulder draped a beaded “dupatta” shawl that wrapped around her back to lay in the crook of her arm. Overall her wedding dress looked stunning and unique while mixing with her heritage.

Indian accessories

indian wedding beaded trim

Adorned like an Indian princess, Andrea accessorized with Indian touches as well. Sparkly bracelets accentuated her femininity from her wrists while “Tikka” jewels crowned her forehead and hairline. The perfect topper for an Indian wedding.

Groom’s Attire

indian wedding couple and son

With the bridal attire complete, it was time to focus on the groom. Andy was attired in gold and red, a real favorite color combination for Indian weddings. So, Andrea found a long gold coat and red “shalwar” pants to compliment her dress. Andy’s sons got a similar treatment with long gold coats and red “shalwar” pants.

Reception location

indian wedding party

Such colorful clothes needed the perfect setting. The Manor House (link) in Littleton was the perfect backdrop for the perfect day. This 1914 historic colonial house is a stunning reception location hidden in Ken Caryl valley. Poised on the picture-perfect setting Andy and Andrea made a colorful commitment to one another.

Inspired wedding dance

indian wedding escort bride

Dressed in their Indian wedding garb, Andy and Andrea chose a traditional western song and dance. “The way you look tonight” by crooner Frank Sinatra was the backdrop for their dance. Working for three months to perfect their first dance, Foxtrot, was time well spent. Andrea could relax in Andy’s arms as they danced for the first time as man and wife.

 indian wedding father daughter dance

Staycation

After the wedding the happy couple opted for a staycation. They took time to visit with friends and family following the happy event. The look forward to planning a honeymoon later on in their marriage.

Announcing the bride and groom

Announcing the bride and groom

It is not every day I get to go to a wedding. I teach wedding dance for about 448 weddings a summer, but I do not go to many of them. When my student Ryan and Joy invited us, I jumped on the opportunity to attend their wedding.

It was a beautiful October afternoon with the sun shining at our backs as they exchanged vows at the school for culinary arts at Denver University. Guests went upstairs at the conclusion of the ceremony to dine on appetizers and chit chat as they took their formal photos.

At the conclusion of photos everyone was ushered downstairs to their assigned tables for dinner. After a delightful meal and moving toasts, Ryan and Joy pushed back some tables and set up for their first dance.

Party at wedding

Party at wedding

A hush fell over the room as the first notes of the Carmen Tango played over the speakers. Joys skirt flew around her as she spun into the first move. With conviction they swirled around the room with their one of a kind Tango.  They had spent 6 months perfecting their first dance so they could surprise their guests. As Joy spun into a drop for the end the crowd exploded, then jumped to their feet as she spun into a second dip and kiss for their grand finale.

After such a super first dance, guests could not wait to join the lovely couple on the floor. Excitement filled the air and everyone jumped up to dance and party to the end of the night. It was made very memorable by this super first dance. I was proud to have been there to see their hard work bear beautiful fruit.

Dancing on the street wedding

Dancing on the street wedding

How many lessons (link) will it take me to learn to dance for my wedding? This is a very important question when it comes to fitting your dancing to you. Each person has unique learning styles, abilities, and time available to work on leaning a new skill. Here is the best question to ask yourself as you plan on leaning to dance for your wedding.

How good do I want to look and feel?

This sets the expectations for how much time it will take you. Here are some statistics. According to Malcom Gladwell to be an expert is 10,000 hours. That is how many hours it took Tony Dovolani  on dancing with the stars to perfect his dancing, and he is still working at it today. So what about the stars they teach? Each star spends 40 hours a week, and  244 hours on their dancing in the course of 8 weeks, or about 8 hrs. a day. Ok, so you may not have the time for that. Experts recommend that wedding couples start 3-6 months in advance of their wedding.

Let’s look at how much time some real wedding couples spent on their dancing:

More than a year (many years of experience)

Cinderella

Steve & Rita

One year in advance:

These couples worked on their first dance, and how to dance all night long

Ryan & Joy

Dirty dancing-Mike and Lori

Six months in advance,

these couples had time to work on fun first dance mixups with multiple dances

Gus & Sierra

Leslie and Malaci

Ed and Monika

Lainey & Ryan

Three months in advance,

These couples concentrated on leaning just their first dance.

Hannah & Aaron

Cassandra

Shannon & Ian

Aloyna and Ryan

In conclusion, the only way to carnage hall is with practice, practice, practice. So there is no shortcut in leaning (dancing in a hurry). Make time for yourself so you can look and feel your best for your first dance.

Merengue-A Popular Social and Wedding DanceWilliam Denver Dance Jam

The Merengue is a fun and easy Latin one step. This is a popular dance at the local clubs in Denver, like Los Cabos, and La Rumba. This fun little dance from the Dominican Republic can liven up any event.

History:

The name Merengue can refer to the sugary treat made with whipped eggs, or the dance. Both are a real treat. The Merengue originated in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and is the national dance of the Dominican Republic.  It is said to have begun with the slaves to the Dominican Republic in 1898. The rumor from Haiti is that it was based on the action of the shackled slaves as they kept cadence with their music. In the Dominican Republic the legend is that they did not want to embarrass their beloved prince/general who was injured and danced with a limp, so everyone danced the same way. What we know for sure is that it came to America in the 1950’s.

Characteristics:

Merengue is danced with a dominant left foot lead and pronounced Cuban motion. It is danced with small steps in a closed dance position to fast music. The music is usually in 2/4 time at a rate of 120-160 beats per minute. This is a fun and easy one step dance that is all the rage at the salsa clubs.

Overview:

  1. This is a fun and easy dance
  2. popular Latin dance at the local clubs
  3. pronounced Cuban motion
  4. danced with small steps
  5. 2/4 time music
  6. 120-160 beats per minute.
  7. a real treat

Jeff & Liz real wedding first dance dip

Jeff & Liz real wedding first dance dip

I have the privilege of teaching many brides and grooms how to dance. Recently I taught Liz Steenhoek, a wedding planner with Colorado Wedding Company. After her wedding I asked her to write a blog, and her hottest tips are below.

Bridal Tips from a wedding planner and past bride:

  1. Start planning early

You may have a specific vendor in mind that you must use! Vendors do fill up early and you don’t want to be stuck with a second best. Also, if you are a do-it-yourself type of person and want to make a lot of the decorations for your wedding, start early! You will be surprised at all the last minute items that come up and time will pass very quickly.

  1. Enlist the help of your bridal party and family, but don’t forget to be grateful

Don’t take it all on yourself or you will go crazy. These people are excited for you and want to help! However, keep in mind that they have stuff going on in their own lives as well, so be conscious of everything you are asking for at once and don’t forget to thank them for all they do!

  1. Jeff & Liz real wedding first dance

Jeff & Liz real wedding first dance

Make the wedding and the details personal to the both of you

While many of us dream of an elaborate and expensive wedding, that may not be a reality. Don’t go into debt to have your perfect day. Remember your guests will go to many weddings over their lifetime and it’s hard to remember one from another years later. Want to make your wedding stand out to your guests? Make the wedding personal to you and your groom. What is special or unique about the two of you? Find something that is fun and tells a story about the two of you and then implement that in your wedding. Your guests will remember that your wedding was fun and unique and appreciate learning more about you as a couple!   (as an aside, here is how Liz made her wedding personal with her first dance, “. Again, thank you very much for Jeff’s and my first dance at our wedding! Everyone loved the mix-up dance! It was so much fun and very us 🙂 thank you for all your help, we could not have pulled off such a special moment without your help!”)

  1. Keep perspective on your wedding

Sure, as women most of us have been planning this perfect day since we were little girls. However, don’t lose perspective on what the day is really about. It is easy to get wrapped up in the little details, the guest list, finding that perfect dress and making sure everything is perfect. But remember that this about you and your husband and the both of you committing to each other for the rest of your lives. Yes, it is an important day, but it is just one day in your journey together.

  1. Jeff & Liz real wedding first dance

Jeff & Liz real wedding first dance

Designate someone to be your go-to on your wedding day

The day you have spent months planning for is finally here! You will find yourself in an array of emotions on this day and it will pass by quickly. Make sure you find time to enjoy it and take care of yourself! Ask a friend to be in charge of looking out for you on this day. They should make sure you eat both during the day and at night, keep your cup full (you will be surprised how you don’t have time to find water or visit the bar), help you go to the bathroom or do anything else for you so that you can enjoy your own wedding. Soak it all in and don’t forget to have fun!

The West coast swing, is a creative and interpretive swing dance. This is a partnership dance that leaves room for both dancers to insert their own ideas and movements.  This is a good dance for creative and expressive individuals.

History:

The West Coast Swing is descended from the lindy hop. It was first noted as the, “Sophisticated Swing” in 1938 and many of the big bands recorded songs about this swing. By 1947 Arthur Murray was sending his staff out to document all the varieties of swing. One of his staff on the west coast, Lauré Haile, documented the western swing. Her work was published in 1951 for the Arthur Murray studios. At this point most of the wild moves and tricks of the Lindy hop fell out of popularity in the ballrooms. This was sped up by the Federal excise tax on dance halls in 1944. After this many people turned to the television to find the latest dance moves. You can see the early West Coast swing in the movie, “Hot Rod Gang.” Some people claim that the slotted movement of the West Coast swing came out of the films like this one where producers were asking the dancers to dance in a slot to keep them on the camera. Others claim it became slotted because there were so many students at the clubs crowding in to learn that the teachers put them all in slots to fit them all in.

In 1961 Skippy Blair recommended that the Western Swing be renamed the West coast swing to avoid confusion with Country swing, and by the late 1960’s the name West Coast Swing had stuck. In this same time, the original coaster step was replaced with the anchor step. By 1988 the West Coast Swing was named the state dance for California, and it still rules there today

Characteristics:
The West Coast Swing is a slotted swing using compression and release between the partners. The west coast swing is one of the few partnership dances that encourages improvisation. Its open hold allows each partner the space to improvise while staying connected with each other. The West Coast swing begins with a walk on 1,2 instead of the rock step like in the swing. The patterns are done to both 6 count and 8 count sequences. West Coast swing music is in 4/4 time and can range from very slow to very fast. The standard tempo for West coast Swing is 102-128 beats per minute.  It can be danced to Big band, Jazz, Blues, Rock & Roll, and contemporary music.  West coast swing is often called a dancers dance, drawing on the vast experience to create moves on the fly. Truly a fun dance to put your creative energy into.
